Lippa

Lippa (also known as Gilli-Danda) is a game which is played with two pieces of equipment: a long  wooden stick and a a small oval-shaped piece of wood

The player has to hit the lippa at the raised end, which flips to the air. The player then strikes it, hitting it as far as possible. The game of lippa has many regional variations and it adapts to a territory’s culture.

Historical Background

The Lippa, a term allegedly Lombard, is an ancient traditional game of uncertain origins.

Despite being considered a game for boys, there is evidence that even in the past it was played by adults of both sexes .

The Most Serene Republic of Venice forbade this game for safety reasons, with bans in Venice and surrounding territories. The first evidence go back to the eleventh / twelfth Egyptian dynasty (2205 BC 1778 BC). It was found in 2003 by researcher Mark Fittà and it is now at the "Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology" in London. The most important findings date back to medieval times and were discovered in the 90s in Bovolone (Verona). They are now at the Archaeological Superintendence of Veneto, Verona .

References to the game can be found in several popular films , including: " Cops and Robbers " with Toto and A. Fabrizi (Italy, 1950) ; " The usual suspects " with Toto, M. Mastroianni , V. Gassman (Italy, 1958) ; "Laurel and Hardy - In Wonderland " (USA , 1934) ; "Watch Out, We're Mad " with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill (USA , 1974).

Moreover, reference to the game can be found in Mario Rigoni Stern’s “Storie dall'Est" and Italo Calvino ‘s  “Before You Say Hello”.

There are four main versions, depending on whether it is played by individuals or in teams, and on whether it is measured by distance (getting as far away as possible from the striking point) or accuracy (reaching a  certain area).

All versions of the game use the same equipment, although in different sizes.
